Let's Go Back In Time - Part 8

It's time for another part of my photo series taken at the Astra Museum situated in Sibiu, Romania.

Today I'd like to show you some washing machine from another century. I don't know exactly when were these invented but they are old.

First you should think of what you have today when it comes to washing. many of you have a washing machine and a drier. Now you can have a look at what I want to show you.

Built of wood and stone and powered manually using running water. Have you ever seen such a washing machine?

They had to scrub the clothes on that grid made of wood while the water was running from above. I can't even begin to imagine how hard that must have been. Clothes were mostly handmade and made of flex or something similar.

This is the other type, which was set up in the water. The clothes were placed in the funnel (I don't even know how to call it) and the water did the rest.

The water current made the clothes rotate all the time, that's how it was cleaned.

Now let's talk about entertainment. This is a carousel made of wood, usually used at fairs, markets. The problem is I don't know how was this operated. There are four seats for eight people but can't see anything that turns the wheel. If you have any idea, let me know.

And finally another water mill, a very small one. You can see the wheel below the wooden structure.
This is all for today, stay tuned for the next part.
