Las fobias para mí son miedos inexplicables y difíciles de superar, más no imposibles. Esto me hizo recordar la primera parte de la película “El Rey León”, siendo un animal tan grande y fuerte creció temeroso de los lobos, no sé si era fobia, pero el fue criado por ovejas y sus “hermanos” le hacían bromas todo el tiempo. Una noche, unos lobos fueron a atacar el rebaño y “lamber” que así se llamaba, se asustó mucho, pero al ver que su madre estaba en peligro, se llenó de valor y rugió tan fuerte que espantó a los lobos, desde ese momento se convirtió en héroe para su familia y en un auténtico Rey de la Selva. Es posible que un detonante nos haga reaccionar al punto de perder ese miedo inexplicable y superar “esa fobia”.

Yo le tenía mucho miedo a las escaleras marineras, también a esas que no son fijas. Las marineras eran las peores, están pegadas a la pared y eso de estar 100% vertical sí que me daba miedo. Para subir y bajar hay que usar las manos y pies, para mí eso era terrible. La primera vez que las vi fue cuando hice una inspección siendo pasante, era como de metro y medio. No pude negarme porque seguía al técnico, y éste, subió tan rápido que no me dio tiempo quejarme. Sin embargo, nunca quise vivir esa experiencia otra vez, pero, la vida es una cosa seria. Ya ejerciendo la carrera, había que subir una escalera marinera de 9 metros de altura. Lo intenté, cuando llevaba 4 peldaños no pude seguir, me paralicé y me aferré a las escalera tan fuerte que casi se me parten los dedos. Me puse fría, pálida y después de tanta insistencia, me ayudaron a bajar. En algunos trabajos la altura era parte de mi oficio, pero no me rendí, así que estando en plena faena, me armé de valor y subí una escalera marinera de 4 metros. Eso me dio confianza y superé el reto, luego subí la de 9 metros. Antes de subir a la de menor distancia pensé “si los demás pueden, yo también”, además, por mi trabajo, mi presencia era requerida en las alturas, me armé de valor y superé esa fobia.

Recientemente, hace como dos semanas, me tocó subir una tipo removible para inspeccionar un estanque, no era muy alto, pero estuve a punto de no subir, es que no las veo seguras, un señora decía “esa escalera aguanta peso”, yo me reí y subí. Algunos insectos forman parte de mis fobias, como ver gusanos, es repugnante y siempre los serán. Pese a ello, me ha tocado curar miasis (coloquialmente llamada gusaneras o infestación en heridas por larvas) en mis perros, en mi afán de salvarlos, ese asco y miedo a la vez se esfuman. Hay personas que no se atreven a curar este tipo de heridas, pero yo sí, me armo de valor para salvar una vida. Otro de los insectos a los que le tengo fobia es a las cucarachas, no las tolero ni muertas.

Ni una foto le tomaría para ponerla en esta publicación, es horrible y justo hoy que pensaba en escribir esta publicación me dije “esta fobia no la puedo superar”. Hace años, pensé en esa fobia, de verdad quería superarla, tanto, que una noche soñé que me hice amiga de una y hasta acariciaba su cuerpo, ay no guácala, en sueño se quedó. Cuando son voladoras, mi fobia aumenta, salgo corriendo a esconderme, por eso en casa no puede faltar el insecticida. Hasta que no las veo muertas, no me quedo tranquila. He tenido episodios repugnantes, cuando las veo grito, mi madre me decía, “no te vaya a pasar como a Dolores Surga, que abortó varias veces por una cucaracha”. Una vez ya acostada me pasó una por la frente, yo me volví loca y le vacié el insecticida encima, ella murió y yo amanecí con gripe. En los tiempos de la crisis de 2017, yo sufrí la escasez, no solo por comida, también por el insecticida. Mi terror era que apareciera una cucaracha y yo no tenía insecticida, no tolero verlas y menos que me rocen. Sin embargo, me tocó armarme de valor y matarlas con una escoba o un zapato, de verdad fue horrible porque no me gusta ni acercarme a ellas. Además de no ser recomendable matarlas así, yo estaba acostumbrada a rociarle insecticida a cierta distancia. La verdad es que no las tolero y esa fobia todavía persiste.

Los ruidos, una vez les tuve fobia, la razón?, una noche un grupo de 5 o 6 personas irrumpieron en mi casa para robarnos y nos apuntaron con una pistola. Esos ruidos que escuché mientras se metían a la casa, se quedaron en mi cabeza por muchos meses. No me dejaban dormir, le tenía miedo a la noche y a los ruidos, a veces no sabía si eran reales. Pensé en buscar ayuda psicológica, pero el costo tan alto en aquellos tiempos de crisis, no me dejaron. El tiempo fue pasando y aquella fobia se fue yendo hasta que desapareció, afortunadamente y gracias a Dios. En resumen, las fobias se pueden superar, unas son más difíciles que otras y las terapias ayudarán.

For me, phobias are inexplicable fears that are difficult to overcome, but not impossible. This reminded me of the first part of the movie “The Lion King,” where such a big and strong animal grew up afraid of wolves. I don't know if it was a phobia, but he was raised by sheep, and his “brothers” teased him all the time. One night, some wolves came to attack the flock, and “Mufasa,” as he was called, was very scared, but when he saw that his mother was in danger, he gathered his courage and roared so loudly that he scared the wolves away. From that moment on, he became a hero to his family and a true King of the Jungle. It is possible that a trigger can cause us to react to the point of losing that inexplicable fear and overcoming “that phobia.”

I was very afraid of ship ladders, especially the ones that aren't fixed. Ship ladders were the worst; they're attached to the wall, and being 100% vertical really scared me. To go up and down, you have to use your hands and feet, which was terrible for me. The first time I saw them was when I was doing an inspection as an intern. They were about five feet high. I couldn't refuse because I was following the technician, and he climbed up so quickly that I didn't have time to complain. However, I never wanted to go through that experience again, but life is a serious thing. Once I was working in my career, I had to climb a 9-meter-high ship ladder. I tried, but after four steps, I couldn't go on. I froze and clung to the ladder so tightly that my fingers almost broke. I became cold and pale, and after much insistence, they helped me down. In some jobs, heights were part of my work, but I didn't give up. So, in the middle of a job, I gathered my courage and climbed a 4-meter ladder. That gave me confidence, and I overcame the challenge. Then I climbed the 9-meter ladder. Before climbing the shorter one, I thought, “If others can do it, so can I.” Besides, because of my job, my presence was required at heights, so I gathered my courage and overcame that phobia.

Recently, about two weeks ago, I had to climb up a removable ladder to inspect a pond. It wasn't very high, but I almost didn't climb up because I don't think they're safe. A woman said, “That ladder can hold your weight,” and I laughed and climbed up. Some insects are part of my phobias, like seeing worms. They're disgusting and always will be. Despite this, I have had to treat myiasis (colloquially known as maggot infestation or larval infestation in wounds) in my dogs. In my eagerness to save them, that disgust and fear disappear. Some people don't dare to treat this type of wound, but I do. I pluck up the courage to save a life. Another insect I have a phobia of is cockroaches. I can't stand them, even when they're dead.

I wouldn't even take a photo to put in this post, it's horrible, and just today when I was thinking about writing this post, I said to myself, “I can't overcome this phobia.” Years ago, I thought about that phobia, I really wanted to overcome it, so much so that one night I dreamed that I became friends with one and even caressed its body, oh no, yuck, it stayed in my dream. When they fly, my phobia increases, I run away to hide, that's why I always have insecticide at home. Until I see them dead, I can't relax. I've had disgusting episodes, when I see them I scream, my mother used to say to me, “don't end up like Dolores Surga, who had several miscarriages because of a cockroach.” Once, when I was already in bed, one crawled across my forehead. I went crazy and emptied the insecticide on it. It died, and I woke up with the flu. During the 2017 crisis, I suffered from shortages, not only of food but also of insecticide. My terror was that a cockroach would appear and I wouldn't have any insecticide. I can't stand to see them, let alone have them touch me. However, I had to pluck up my courage and kill them with a broom or a shoe. It was really horrible because I don't even like to go near them. Besides not being advisable to kill them that way, I was used to spraying insecticide from a distance. The truth is that I can't stand them, and that phobia still persists.

Noises—I used to have a phobia of them. The reason? One night, a group of five or six people broke into my house to rob us and pointed a gun at us. Those noises I heard while they were breaking into the house stayed in my head for many months. They kept me awake at night. I was afraid of the night and of noises. Sometimes I didn't know if they were real. I thought about seeking psychological help, but the high cost in those times of crisis prevented me from doing so. Time passed and that phobia gradually faded away until it disappeared, fortunately and thank God. In short, phobias can be overcome. Some are more difficult than others, and therapy can help.
