Hello everyone!
This is a really pretty 1957 Ladies Sheffield Sterling Silver Handled Letter Opener.
The handle is sterling silver and the blade a mirror finish stainless steel.
Makers Mark: Harrison Brothers
The crown: indicates Sheffield
Lion indicates sterling .925
The letter, a fancy P, is indicating 1957
If you flip it over, it seems to have a redundant crown and lion markings.
I purchased this via Ebay from a dealer in England.
The story behind my looking for this is that I had a letter opener at work, just your ordinary run of the mill junk letter opener. No silver-nothing special. It worked really well until one day, it broke while opening the mail. No big deal except I had come to depend on that silly little letter opener to save me from endless paper cuts when opening the mail for the clinic! I got to thinking that if I was going to replace this for me, why not do it with some class and style! So, began my journey to find just what I was looking for. I was willing to pay under $40 for it, but amazingly, most of them were going for a whole lot more! I stumbled on this one which had a 'buy it now' or 'make offer'. So I offered and was rewarded by the seller saying yes. I paid just over $30 for it. It opens the mail perfectly, but it comes home with me each night. My workplace is secure, but I just like to look at it, lol!
