Manhattan Special - Sarsaparilla
Soda Review
Manhattan Special is a beverage company that began back in 1895, located in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, New York. Manhattan Special is best-known for it's unique Espresso Coffee soda, made from espresso beans, seltzer water and sugar. They serve classic soda flavors as well, such as orange, cream, cherry and sarsaparilla. I decided to order a bottle of Sarsaparilla from The Soda Emporium. Sarsaparilla was a soft-drink popular in America during the 18th Century. It was originally created as a remedy from the Sarsaparilla plant, although the classic American style that we know today is made with birch oil and sassafras. It is similar to root beer and is reminiscent of Cowboys and their Southern Belles.
The Bottle
The container of the Manhattan Special Sarsaparilla is a 10 fluid ounce brown glass bottle. The label is yellow and features a bubbly mug of Sarsaparilla soda with a blooming sarsaparilla plant in the background. It truly looks like a classic label for a soda bottle.
The Soda
I poured the Manhattan Special Sarsaparilla over ice. It bubbled up nicely (nothing near as bubbly as the drink featured on the label). The drink was loaded with flavor, much like root beer. Unlike most root-based drinks on the market, the Manhattan Special brand uses natural flavor to give the soda a true root taste. At only 10 fluid ounces, this bottle went down rather quickly. This was my first time having a soda titled 'Sarsaparilla' and it was delicious. I am excited to try some of Manhattan Special's Espresso Coffee sodas in the future.
