Speaking to Matt Alt of the Wall Street Journal, Shigeichi Negishi's daughter, Atsumi Takano, revealed that her father fell on January 26 and died of natural causes a short time later. Shigeichi Negishi passed away at the age of 100.

Shigeichi Negishi invented the first karaoke machine in 1967, so he was also known as the godfather of karaoke. According to a Wall Street Journal report, his original invention started as something of a joke. Shigeichi Negishi loved to sing, and while he was singing, a colleague joked that he had a terrible voice, so he started daydreaming about what he might sound with a backing track. And Shigeichi Negishi planned to create a machine that would allow him to sing over a backing track, in fact his idea was very simple he would create a machine that would play instrumental tapes and to sing his heart out over a backing track like a real popstar. Meanwhile, according to his daughter's statements, Shigeichi Negishi never patented the design because it was not worth the cost and headache.
It's been many years since I participated a karaoke party, but we used to have a lot of karaoke parties with friends, especially during high school, and we really had a lot of fun. I was sad to hear of the death of Shigeichi Negishi, the inventor of karaoke, the life and soul of karaoke parties. Frankly, I don't know what kind of life he had, but I thank him for adding fun to our parties.
