I went to Alaba International Market, Ojo in Lagos, Nigeria yesterday to buy some grains then took them to the millers in the market to mill them to produce grinded meals for the family. I used to buy the ones that were already packaged and imported or the local ones that were also package but I observed that each time I ate them they were giving me one form of health concern or the other because of the preservatives that some of them were made with or the swelling agents added to them to make them bigger when prepared. Most of these chemicals were just not good for me, the made me add weight uncontrollable or have one form of digestive issues or heart burns which was always causing me one discomfort or the other.
How I Learnt about Milling My Own Grains
As someone who loves people no matter their tribe, colour or country, I had become friends with my man Abu, from the northerner part of the country and I told him what I was going through with milled feeds. He said he would have told me about milling my own grains it a long time ago but thought like my people (people from the eastern part of the country) I preferred the packaged stuff. I let him understand that we had been processing our own food stuff from way back in time but that our people like taking up modern living lifestyles faster than any other region which in a way is good because you stay in tone with modernization and in way is also bad because you lose touch with the way things used to be fast too. At the end of our decisions he introduced me to local milling of my own grains sometime at the mid of last year.
The Good Thing about Milling Your Own Grains
One good thing about milling your own grains is that you can choose what is good for your health. If you are a diabetic patient you can mill grains that are rice in protein naturally like wheat, millet wild rice and others. If you want grains that are high in carbohydrate, you can mill grains like corn, quinoa and even include dried tubers like cassava and yams. You can do your mix according to how you want it to be the important thing for me is that they are natural without any chemicals additives that will end up harming you even if not now but some day in the future when you should be relaxing enjoying old age a lot of illnesses start springing up just because you didn’t take care of yourself and what you were eating at a much younger age.
Chemicals In Food Are Not Harmful?
I see a lot of these processed food companies trying to sell us the idea that the chemicals they are adding to the food we eat are not harmful but I think they are. The growing number of people dying of one form of terminal sickness or the other is growing rampantly. Illnesses we used to term white man illness or big man illness is now hitting every class of the society and this is because we are consuming too much processed food that is preserved with loads or chemicals or that there are chemicals added to boost one thing or the other.
Let’s Make A Change
In the words of 2Pac
“…We gotta make a change
It's time for us as a people to start making some changes
Let's change the way we eat, let's change the way we live
And let's change the way we treat each other
You see the old way wasn't working
So it's on us to do what we gotta do to survive…” _ Change by 2Pac Source.
