Njemps and Baringo Lake

Who are the Njemp in Kenya?
The Ilchamus, also known as Njemps, are a Maa people living south and southeast of Lake Baringo, Kenya. They number around 35,000 and are closely related to the Samburu who live further north-east in the Rift Valley Province.
Jemps The Chamus people (Njemps) speak the Samburu language and are often referred to as the Samburu people. The Chamus (Njemps) lives in Baringo.

The Njemps are the only tribe of pastoralists, livestock breeders, who also fish, unlike other pastoral tribes where eating fish is a taboo. During the migration the Njemp developed a very different lifestyle trying to maintain the nomadic Maasai and Samburu shunning the nomadic movement and became sedentary farmers although the land around the lake was not particularly fertile, they developed an effective irrigation system and grew crops on the Lakeshore. "You arrive at their island after a short trip on a small boat, in Lake Baringo, here it is possible to see eagles and crocodiles, cormorants and egrets.

They waited for us with their costumes and welcomed old and smiling children with their typical dances, we danced with them and after this afternoon together, it still hurts, despite the short time, to think that perhaps we will never return!"
