Our excitement was at its peak after having gone to the Iguazu Falls, and the next destination that awaited us was totally different from what we had known so far.
Nuestra emoción estaba al tope después de haber ido a las Cataratas del Iguazú, y el siguiente destino que nos esperaba era totalmente diferente a lo que habíamos conocido hasta ahora.
When I planned this trip to Argentina and saw the map of the country, my eyes wandered to its southern tip, where it said Tierra del Fuego (Land of the Fire), Ushuaia, and when I read a little about this city that is known as "the end of the world", I said to myself: I want to go there! This was the last region we visited and fortunately the budget was enough 😃.
Cuando planifiqué este viaje a Argentina y vi el mapa del país, mis ojos se desviaron hasta su extremo sur, donde decía Tierra del Fuego, Ushuaia, y al leer un poco sobre esta ciudad que es conocida como “el fin del mundo”, me dije: ¡yo quiero ir hasta allá! Esta fue la última región que visitamos y afortunadamente el presupuesto alcanzó 😃.
The flight from Puerto Iguazu to the province of Tierra del Fuego left around noon, it was a bit tiring because we made a stopover, and we arrived in Ushuaia at about 7:00 pm. I knew it would be very cold here, but believe me, I didn't imagine it would be so cold, as soon as we left the airport to look for a cab to take us to the hotel, the icy wind slapped us mercilessly 😆.
El vuelo desde Puerto Iguazú a la provincia de Tierra del Fuego salió como al mediodía, fue algo cansón porque hicimos escala, y llegamos a Ushuaia como a las 7:00 de la noche. Yo sabía que acá haría mucho frío, pero créanme, no imaginé que fuera tanto, apenas salimos del aeropuerto a buscar un taxi que nos llevara al hotel, el viento helado nos cacheteó sin piedad 😆.
In total we spent five days here, I will leave the adventures we lived in nature for the next posts and tell you first about the city, which although small, has many things to see. My mom and I stayed in a centrally located and modest hotel called Alakaluf, from the room we had a tremendous view of the sea and the mountains.
En total estuvimos cinco días aquí, voy a dejar las aventuras que vivimos en la naturaleza para las siguientes publicaciones y les hablaré primero de la ciudad, que aunque pequeña, tiene muchas cosas para ver. Mi mamá y yo nos alojamos en un céntrico y modesto hotel llamado Alakaluf, desde la habitación teníamos una tremenda vista al mar y las montañas.
The morning after our arrival, we went down to the hotel dining room for breakfast and we were lucky that the table next to the window was unoccupied, outside there was a cat who stopped to look at us, and we at him, good morning! Too bad that because of the backlighting we don't see ourselves much in the picture.
La mañana siguiente de nuestra llegada, bajamos a desayunar al comedor del hotel y tuvimos la suerte de que la mesa junto a la ventana estaba desocupada, en la parte de afuera había un gato que se paró a observarnos, y nosotras a él, ¡buenos días! Lástima que por el contraluz no nos vemos mucho en la foto.
Then, before going on our first excursion, we went for a short walk through the streets of Ushuaia, specifically the main street: San Martin. It was October and supposedly it wasn't so cold... It must be for the locals there, because I was freezing 🥶, and I didn't have proper clothes either, my mom and I had wool sweaters, but they were not very warm, the best are special winter jackets, but we couldn't spend on that, so I put on several layers of clothes, what we did buy were gloves, because the cold was coming in through the hands.
Luego, antes de ir a nuestra primera excursión, fuimos a caminar un poco por las calles de Ushuaia, específicamente por la principal: San Martín. Era octubre y supuestamente no hacía tanto frío… Será para los habitantes de allí, porque yo me estaba congelando 🥶, y tampoco tenía ropa adecuada, mi mamá y yo teníamos unos suéteres de lana, pero no abrigaban mucho, lo mejor son las chaquetas especiales de invierno, pero no podíamos gastar en eso, así que me puse varias capas de ropa, lo que sí compramos fueron guantes, porque el frío entraba por las manos.
Ushuaia, capital of the province of Tierra del Fuego, Antarctica and South Atlantic Islands, is a young city. It was founded in 1884, and although at the beginning it was a military post and a prison colony, with the passing of the years and its beautiful natural landscapes, it became a great tourist destination.
Ushuaia, capital de la provincia de Tierra del Fuego, Antártida e Islas del Atlántico Sur, es una ciudad joven. Fue fundada en 1884, y aunque al inicio fue un puesto militar y una colonia carcelaria, con el paso de los años y sus bellísimos paisajes naturales, se convirtió en un gran destino turístico.
The southernmost city in the world is not very big either, its surface area is 23 square kilometers, and its population is just over 80,000 inhabitants.
La ciudad más austral del mundo tampoco es muy grande, su superficie es de 23 km cuadrados, y su población poco más de 80.000 habitantes.
Something that caught my attention was the architecture that predominates here, materials such as wood and metal sheets are seen in many of the buildings, as well as stones. In its first years of creation, many foreigners came to live here, from countries like England, Spain, Croatia, Italy, Germany, among others, and that surely influenced its appearance.
Algo que me llamó la atención fue la arquitectura que predomina aquí, materiales como la madera y las láminas de metal, se ven en muchas de las edificaciones, así como también las piedras. En sus primeros años de creación, llegaron a vivir acá muchos extranjeros, de países como Inglaterra, España, Croacia, Italia, Alemania, entre otros, y eso seguro influenció su aspecto.
I also found its name curious, and when I read the brochures I was given at the tourist point of the city, I learned that it comes from the Yámana language, the meaning of Ushuaia is "bay facing west" or "bay entering to the west". In this region lived the indigenous people of the Yámanas, Haush, Selknam or Onas and Alakaluf, who sadly were annihilated little by little by the evils brought by colonization.
Su nombre también me pareció curioso, y al leer los folletos que me dieron en el punto turístico de la ciudad, supe que proviene de la lengua Yámana, el significado de Ushuaia es “bahía que mira hacia el poniente” o "bahía que entra hacia el oeste". En esta región hacían vida los indígenas de los pueblos Yámanas, Haush, Selknam u Onas y Alakaluf, quienes tristemente fueron aniquilados poco a poco por los males que trajo la colonización.
Walking near the port, at sunset, we came across a wall with a phrase emblematic of this city: USHUAIA end of the world, beginning of everything. Isn't it poetic?
Caminando cerca del puerto, al atardecer, nos topamos con una pared que tenía una frase emblemática de esta ciudad: USHUAIA fin del mundo, principio de todo. ¿No es poético?
And the light in this place? Almost every morning and evening of the days we were here, the sky was cloudy, but in the afternoons the sun appeared radiant, you will see in the next posts. The truth is that the weather is super changeable, in one day you can experience the four seasons and their shades, pure visual poetry.
¿Y la luz de este lugar? Casi todas las mañanas y anocheceres de los días que estuvimos aquí, el cielo estuvo nublado, pero en las tardes el sol aparecía radiante, ya verán en las próximas publicaciones. Lo cierto es que el clima es súper cambiante, en un día puedes experimentar las cuatro estaciones y sus matices, poesía visual pura.
To finish, I leave you with images of some of the other places we visited in Ushuaia. Although we didn't spend much time in the city, because I preferred to make excursions in the surroundings, when I travel I always try to go to the museums (if there are any), I like to get information about the history of the place, and in these institutions you get it in a didactic way.
Para terminar, los dejo con imágenes de algunos otros puntos que visitamos en Ushuaia. Aunque no pasamos mucho tiempo en la ciudad, porque preferí hacer excursiones por sus alrededores, cuando viajo siempre procuro ir a los museos (si los hay), me gusta obtener información de la historia del lugar, y en estas instituciones la consigues de una manera didáctica.
