Desk Calendar – #freewrite No. 10, Day 808

The desk calendar sat in the office stuck on November 21, and it did not move. The lights never came on. It felt that its life was wasting away.

The air grew thin because the door never opened. It had no idea what had happened. It looked to the computer screen that stood just to its left on the desk. The screen had gone dark weeks ago and never turned back on.

The chair swiveled no more. The blinds did not sing their song from the interior glass window behind it. The desk calendar even missed the annoying buzz of the vacuum cleaner that used to disturb its dark nights.

It thrilled, one day, to finally hear the slide of a key in the office door. Had the person come back after so long? Its pages had been untorn for months at that point.

It found instead, a new home – off the desk, through the still dark outer office, into blinding light, and then the deep stench of the dumpster.
