Strange Skies

The atmosphere is strange
As the sun is sinking low
When forest fire smoke
Makes an orange-tinted glow

The old saying, "Red sky at night, sailor's delight, red sky at morning, sailor take warning" doesn't seem to apply. Red sky at night here just means fire season and an earlier sunset as autumn approaches. Photos just don't do it justice, so none accompany this post. Instead, I offer screenshots of smoke maps. The last couple hours have been almost surreal as the sinking sun filters through the haze and bathes everything in orange. I suspect smoke scatters light from the blue and violet end of the spectrum, so only the yellow/orange/red remains.

The monitors nearest me show yellow, and the smoke has been making me feel vaguely ill. There isn't even a chance of rain in the forecast until almost a week from now. Yuck. There have been worse years in the recent past, but this is still no fun at all.
