The Perfect Filipino-Style Dessert Called "Halo-Halo"

There’s this time of the year that’s really quite hot, and feels like the sun is showing us its true power – especially during the summer. Some of us are spending time at beaches, or making refreshing drinks at home. It depends on how we wanted to at least lessen the warm feeling during a sunny day.

But here in the Philippines, we do have a famous icy treat for a hot summer day. Some of you may have seen it already, and it is called “Halo-Halo”. I might have caught your attention about this popular dessert, so keep reading to know more!

During the summer, you can mostly see street vendors selling this sweet dessert in a very affordable price. To give you a brief description about it, it is a mixture of sweet ingredients with shaved ice on top and evaporated milk.

Here's the common ingredients used:

  • Sweetened Banana
  • Sweetened Beans
  • Jackfruit
  • Sago / Agar
  • Coconut Strips
  • Ube Jam

It's an ordinary afternoon when I thought of something to eat. Since it's scorching hot outside, I decided to look for a refreshing food. When I went on the streets to check who might be selling some snacks, I saw someone selling some halo-halo. I ordered and paid for my order and waited for a few minutes as the vendor prepared it.

While doing the preparation of putting the ingredients in the cup and shaving ice, I just watched the whole process and it made me crave for it even more. After waiting, I finally get to hold my cup of halo-halo and immediately went home.

As I got home, I grabbed a bowl and put the halo-halo in it. It is because I wanted to mix it better and I cannot do it in the plastic cup. As you can see above, it's really full of ingredients with some toppings as well. When I already put the dessert on a larger bowl, I immediately mixed the ingredients together with the evaporated milk and sugar in it. I did not add anything anymore.

This dessert is really a must-try during the summer, and you will surely love its refreshingly sweet taste. Also, you can just do it at home and buy the ingredients so you can put more of them. As for me, I chose to have it while I am working my freelance job as a content writer. I enjoyed it, and it really satisfied my tastebuds.
