On a tour I came across two huge trees, which after inquiring I found that they corresponded to the species Ceiba pentandra, popularly known by several common names such as "kapok". As I approached I noticed that they showed photosynthetic stems and the most distinctive feature was the deployment of its buttresses at the base of the stem that serve as support. These buttresses or stem extensions are adaptations due to the fact that it is a very heavy or stout tree.
Haciendo un recorrido me encontré con dos árboles enormes, que luego de indagar encontré que correspondían a la especie Ceiba pentandra, conocido popularmente entre varios nombres comunes como "ceiba". Al acercarme noté que mostraban tallos fotosintéticos y lo más distintivo era el despliegue de sus contrafuertes en la base del tallo que le sirven de sostén. Esos contrafuertes o prolongaciones del tallo son adaptaciones debido a que es un árbol muy pesado o corpulento.

The following photograph shows other green photosynthetic marks on the stem, where it is also observed that the outer surface of the bark is smooth and pale gray. In young trees the bark usually has spines.
En la siguiente fotografía se aprecian otras marcas fotosintéticas verdes en el tallo, donde además se observa que la superficie exterior de la corteza es lisa y de color gris pálido. En árboles jóvenes la corteza generalmente posee espinas.
Now I show photographs of one of the trees (in which I captured the selfie), where you can appreciate some of its characteristics which are a straight, cylindrical stem, without branches, because the branching usually occurs above. This tree can reach a height of up to 50 meters and the stem has a diameter of up to 2 meters.
Ahora muestro fotografías de uno de los árboles (en el que capturé la selfi), donde se aprecian algunas de sus características que son un tallo recto, cilíndrico y sin ramas, porque la ramificación suele producirse arriba. Este árbol puede alcanzar una altura de hasta 50 metros y el tallo un diámetro de hasta 2 metros.

I tried to look for leaves and fruits of the plant species but did not find them, however, I continued the tour and saw another tree in which I noticed that it did not have many leaves on the top and its fruits were visible. I went closer, looked on the ground and found a leaf and several fruits.
Traté de buscar hojas y frutos de la especie de planta pero no los encontré, sin embargo, continué el recorrido y vi otro árbol en el que noté que no tenía muchas hojas en la copa y sus frutos eran visibles. Me acerqué, busque en el suelo y encontré una hoja y varios frutos.
The leaf I found is palmate and is composed with a long petiole and has 5 leaflets (can have up to 9). Each leaflet has a short petiolule, and the pinnately veined leaflets have a lanceolate to oblanceolate lamina shape, entire margin and acuminate apices.
La hoja que encontré es palmada y está compuesta con un largo peciolo y posee 5 foliolos (pueden tener hasta 9). Cada foliolo tiene un pecíolo corto, y los folíolos con venas pinnadas, tienen forma de lámina lanceolada a oblanceolada, margen entero y ápices acuminados.
Regarding the fruits I found, they are of the oblong-ellipsoid capsule type, narrowed at both ends. The unripe fruits are green in color and become brown upon ripening.
Con relación a los frutos que encontré, son del tipo cápsula oblongo-elipsoide, estrechados en ambos extremos. Los frutos inmaduros son de color verde y se vuelven marrones al madurar.
Ceiba pentandra is the national tree of Guatemala and for classic Maya a sacred tree which connects the upper, middle, and underworlds.
Ceiba pentandra es el árbol nacional de Guatemala y para los mayas clásicos un árbol sagrado que conecta los mundos superior, medio e inferior.
