CEBU PH: The Taste of Sugbo Mercado

A whole day plan went wrong.

TGIF and what’s the best way to end the weekday? With foods of course 😅

Hi everyone! I’m Cian 🤘 and we’re going to the most famous weekend food market in town. Get your tummies ready haha.

My friends and I planned that morning to eat out because it’s Friday, the end of the long work week. Preferably somewhere new because we almost always eat at the same place. We always go to Sugbo Mercado for it is accesible and a lot of foods to choose from.

Decided to try “The Pyramid” for the first time, in which is just a few walks away from Sugbo Mercado. I mean look at the pic above. The place is such a beauty with its shape covered with purple lights. 💜

And this is where this TGIF went wrong. Izza prank. It’s closed. 🙁

So we strolled around IT Park. Walked and walked and walked. But a lot of stores that we used to go to are already close. 🙁 so.... we still ended up at Sugbo Mercado hahaha.

This place is a food market that is only open from Wednesday to Sunday 11am to 8pm. Before pandemic, it used to close at a much later time.

It has a lot of food stalls inside. From Filipino local foods, Indian cuisine, Thai, Japanese dishes, and a lot to mention. Foods and drinks everywhere in this spacious box.

They now have health declaration forms since pandemic started and limited person per table. The lively place we always visit every weekend is now not how it used to be 🙁 A lot changed. Even the live band and game shows are already nowhere to be found.

But anyway, we’re still glad that Sugbo Mercado is still open, although a lot of its previous stalls inside already closed. Maybe I’ve just attached a lot of memories to places that when I saw our usual hangout place become something not that lively anymore, I suddenly got sad.

But this sad feeling left my body when it was finally time to eat hahaha. Good food good mood.

We ordered from different food stalls. I really got jealous when @sassycebuana posted that she ate ramen one rainy day hahaha 😂. So I ordered Tonkatsu ramen w/ Ajitama worth PHP 290/ USD 5.8 (Epi Zen) and with Mango Pandan worth PHP 110/ USD 2.2 (Ally Mango). I’m so full, but not my wallet 😋.

Meanwhile, my other friends also enjoyed eating their own meals: Lechon belly (Kuzina Guadalupe), Sizzling lechon belly w/ Bone Marrow (Sugbowa), and Juice.

WHAT’S WITH THE LECHON BELLY GUYS HAHAHAHA 😅

Last week, Teresa and her boyfriend also went here for a date. SANAOL ditdit 😕. They ate buttered scallops, crabs and shrimps + drinks from Tropic Fruit Bar, a seafood lover couple indeed. Sanaol.

HOW TO GET THERE

I know you wanna come here too hahaha. So I’ll tell you how. 😊 🚗

My friend and I went here via taxi which costs around PHP 150/ USD 3 from Robinsons Fuente (downtown) to Sugbo Mercado.

You can choose to ride a jeep/mini bus with code 17B which will go inside IT Park and tell the driver you want to be dropped at Sugbo Mercado. Well, you can also ride other codes like 13C or other jeeps going to Talamban and be dropped at the entrance of IT park then walk to Sugbo Mercado.

You can book a Grab car/Angkas or ride habal-habal (motorcycle) too. Rate varies.

The safest mode is via private car, just pin Sugbo Mercado and you’re good to go.

Good food + good friends + good place is really the complete package.

It’s just sad how things changed so fast. We used to eat here with my classmates every weekend, talk about a lot of things and enjoy the wide choice of foods. That is why we really value this place so much.

Hope we can already eat here again the same way as before. 😁 A place full of faces with bright smiles, not covered with a face mask and face shield...
