I took a drive to Sandpoint, Idaho last evening, and stopped at the Albeni Falls Dam Visitor Center for some sightseeing. Unfortunately, the visitor's center was closed. Based on the interpretive signs along the path down to the river, there were beautiful waterfalls here once, and a man named Albeni Poirier was so captivated by the vista that he built a lodge there. Then the Army Corps of Engineers built this concrete monstrosity for flood control and power generation between 1951 and 1955. The turbines can generate 42,600 kilowatts. The flood control locks also help maintain the water levels in Lake Pend Oreille.
I wish I could have seen what it was like before. I did finally get a good photo of what looks like an actual Philadelphus lewisii, though, instead of the previous misidentified shrub!
The rest of these wildflowers and ornamental flowers need further identification. Time is short to finish this post though. Perhaps I'll return after taking some more time for research, unless some of you beat me to it in the comments!
I'll close with a picture of the dam itself and a railroad bridge.
