In my last post I wrote about self-improvement. The feedback was great and I’m really thankful for that. That’s why I decided to write more about this topic.

Self-reflection is a necessary thing for self-improvement, in my opinion. Getting better is hard if you don’t know where to start. But even if you know that, what do you have to expect and how do you keep on track. For this you need a goal. But you need the right goal. If you set it too low, your expectations will not be fulfilled. If you set it too high, reaching it is nearly impossible and it can be demotivating. So you need the right balance.

Since I’m in physiotherapy-school, I want to show you a method to formulate goals that should be used in therapy. It is called the SMART-method. SMART stands for specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-bound. The relevance is negligible, since you are formulating a goal for yourself. If you want to improve something you won’t think of it as irrelevant. Let’s take a look at the other aspects with an example.

Specific

Set a goal as specific as possible. The more nonspecific it is, the harder it gets to stay on track. It would not be a specific goal to be happier. You have to break it down. Why are you not happy enough right now? It would be more specific if you say you are unhappy because you are not spending enough time with your family or if you want to lose weight. Let’s stick with the weight-problem. It is a common thing and a good example, I think.

Measurable

As motivation you need something you can look at. Something you can work towards. This is a lot easier if you have numbers. You don’t just want to lose weight. You want to lose 10 kilograms, or you want to reduce your waist size by 3 centimeters. This is also a good way if you want to check you progress.

Attainable

If you want to lose these 10 kilograms in a week you should think about it again. This is not realistic and will just be demotivating for you.

Time-bound

It is not a real goal if you don’t set a time-limit. You will push your goal in the background and do other things that are more or less important. Procrastination can be really annoying. Maybe you have already experienced it. I sure did. If you set a limit do not set it too short in the future. It may not be attainable, if you do so. But don’t set it too far in the future, either. This would make it hard to stay on track and keep focused on your goal. If you have a big goal that is hard to be reached in a short period of time, try to break it down. You should not try to lose 36 kilograms in a year, but to lose 3 kilograms a month for twelve months in a row.

This is just one way to set goals for yourself. I know that it can be hard to work towards your goals if you are not self-disciplined enough. This method may have the potential to help you.

In meinem letzten Post (der bisher nur auf Englisch zu lesen ist, wenn Bedarf besteht, schreibe ich den aber auch gern nochmal) habe ich über persönliche Entwicklung und Selbstverbesserung geschrieben. Wegen des guten Feedbacks werde ich mit diesem Post noch weiter in diese Richtung gehen.

Selbstreflexion ist meiner Ansicht nach ein notwendiges Mittel zur persönlichen Entwicklung. Etwas gezielt zu verbessern kann schwer sein, wenn man nicht weiß, wo man anfangen soll. Aber selbst, wenn man diesen Schritt getan hat, ist es schwer einzuschätzen, die eigenen Erwartungen richtig einzuschätzen und auf der Spur zu bleiben. Dafür braucht man ein Ziel, unzwar das richtige. Setzt man sich sein Ziel zu niedrig, werden die Erwartungen nicht erfüllt, setzt man es zu hoch, ist das erreichen fast unmöglich und es wirkt demotivierend. Man muss also einen Mittelweg finden. Nicht immer ganz einfach…

Da ich momentan die Ausbildung zum Physiotherapeuten mache, möchte ich euch eine Methode zur Zielformulierung vorstellen, die auch in der Therapie angewendet werden sollte. Die sogenannte SMART-Methode. Smart steht für specific (spezifisch), measurable (messbar), attainable (erreichbar), relevant (hier spare ich mir die Übersetzung) und time-bound (zeitlich gebunden). Die Relevanz ist vernachlässigbar, wenn man sich selbst ein Ziel setzt. Wenn man etwas verbessern möchte, hält man es nicht für irrelevant. Die anderen Punkte werde ich anhand eines Beispiels erläutern.

Spezifisch

Ein Ziel sollte so spezifisch wie möglich sein. Je unspezifischer es ist, desto schwieriger ist es, am Ball zu bleiben. Angenommen, man fühlt sich nicht glücklich und möchte diesen Umstand ändern, wäre es kein gutes Ziel, glücklicher werden zu wollen. Man sollte sich vorher klarmachen, weshalb man unglücklich ist. Verbringt man zu wenig Zeit mit der Familie, ist man mit der Figur unzufrieden, was auch immer. Für die folgenden Punkte werde ich beim Figur-Problem bleiben. Es ist, glaube ich, ein verbreitetes Problem zu dem sich gut Beispiele finden lassen.

Messbar

Zur Motivation braucht man etwas Greifbares. Etwas, auf das man hinarbeiten kann. Das ist einfacher, wenn man Zahlen vor Augen hat. Man möchte nicht einfach nur Gewicht verlieren, sondern 10 Kilogramm oder drei Centimeter an Taillenumfang. Das macht es auch einfacher, Fortschritte festzustellen und festzuhalten.

Erreichbar

Wenn man 10 Kilogramm innerhalb einer Woche verlieren möchte, sollte man vielleicht nochmal drüber nachdenken. Das ist einfach nicht realistisch und wirkt nur demotivierend.

Zeitlich gebunden

Ohne zeitliche Begrenzung ist es kein gutes Ziel. Es wird in den Hintergrund geraten und man erledigt lieber wichtigere oder auch unwichtigere Dinge. Prokrastination kann nervig sein. Vielleicht hast Du damit schon Erfahrung. Ich auf alle Fälle. Wenn man sich ein Limit setzt, sollte es nicht zu knapp sein. Dadurch wird das Ziel nicht mehr erreichbar. Wird das Limit zu weit gefasst, wird es härter, am Ball zu bleiben. Hat man ein besonders großes Ziel, kann es sinnvoll sein, es auf kleinere Zwischenziele zu verteilen. Es ist einfacher, drei Kilogramm pro Monat für zwölf Monate zu verlieren, als 36 Kilogramm in einem Jahr.

Das ist natürlich nur eine Möglichkeit, sich Ziele zu setzen. Ich weiß, dass es hart sein kann, ein Ziel zu verfolgen, wenn man nicht genug Selbstdisziplin hat. Diese Methode gibt die Möglichkeit, das ganze etwas einfacher zu machen.
